Are you a surfer chasing the best waves, a newlywed looking for an unforgettable honeymoon with your couple, an international cuisine lover, or a confessed admirer of Costa Rica's biodiversity?
Whatever your hobby or travel plan is, there´s a tiny size special place in Costa Rica huge in beauty and perfect conditions for those mentioned activities and much more.
Its name is Santa Teresa, a charming popular town, embraced by a long and white sand beach.
Located about 150 km east of San José, at the western end of the Peninsula de Nicoya, in Puntarenas, it is considered one of the most beautiful beaches in the world, according to Forbes magazine.
Santa Teresa is like the Hawaii of Costa Rica, a world reference for the most experienced and rookie surfers. As soon as you enter the town, you´ll feel an inevitable natural desire to get on a board and jump into the sea. The quality of its coast currents and the all-year fantastic waves make it an ideal place for this aquatic sport. And if you don't know or need practice, there are plenty of places to learn.
If you are looking for something less adrenaline, in Santa Teresa you can also practice yoga -it´s very common to see people meditating or taking some class-, take sunbathe, walk across the white sand or simply sit or lay back staring into the sunset. Horseback riding, swimming, paragliding, or family activities such as sport fishing, diving, and kitesurfing, are other highly attractive options for tourists.
Gastronomy is one of Santa Teresa´s strengths. Try the delicious and typical dishes, desserts, and cocktails in the different bars and restaurants, located along the promenade. You can find an exclusive menu from Argentina, Asia, France, or Thailand, the famous American hamburger, or the traditional Costa Rican food (we recommend you to visit Restaurante Tiquicia).
Costa Rica concentrates one of the world´s largest biodiversity, and Santa Teresa is a good sample of it. You can prove it by taking a horseback ride or flying through the tropical jungle on a canopy tour and experiencing a unique view of the natural exuberance. Complement it with a day trip to the Cabo Blanco Nature Reserve, a conservation area that gathers more than 240 species of birds. A little further, an hour and 15 minutes away by car from Santa Teresa, is the Curú Wildlife Refuge, which protects beautiful beaches, abundant vegetation, and trails to see raccoons and deer.
The dusty streets of Santa Teresa are widely used to ride ATVs and move to other incredible nearby spots: Malpaís, with its beautiful multicolored sea and small natural pools; Montezuma Waterfall, often ranked as one of the best waterfalls in Costa Rica, or Playa Hermosa (10 minutes away by car from Santa Teresa), a perfect destination for hiking and good waves for surfing. Other options are Playa Carmen and Playa Cuevas (known as Suecos), a special place to practice snorkeling in the beachside caves.
As you see, there is no way to get bored in Santa Teresa. Whether you go as a couple, with family, or, with friends, this awesome town will not disappoint you. For a smooth and easy trip, it is better to rent a 4x4 car. Although most of the access road is fine, other parts are not in such good condition.
At Hertz Costa Rica we have the right car so that neither the streets nor the distance – it is a 5-hour drive from Juan Santamaría airport – prevent you from enjoying a wonderful experience.
